Inspiration

Imagine a road in your community. A road that was promised in the last election and funded in this year's budget. But today, it's still hasn’t been fixed. Who do you talk to? Who is responsible? How do you even know what was budgeted?

This isn't just about one road, it's a system-wide disconnect that stalls progress. Beacon changes this. It's not another directory app. It's your personal signal for change, an AI-powered civic agent in your pocket. It tells you who represents you, illuminates the budgets meant for your community, and gives you a direct, trackable line to demand action.

What it does

Beacon is a mobile application that serves as a citizen's personal signal for change. It's an AI-powered civic agent that makes accountability simple, direct, and effective. At its core, it does three things:

  1. Illuminates Your Representatives: Using your phone's GPS, Beacon instantly tells you who your elected officials are at the local, state, and federal levels, providing their contact details and responsibilities.

  2. Unlocks Public Budgets: Our "Budget Unboxed" feature uses AI to read and simplify complex government budget documents, allowing you to search for projects and funding allocated to your specific community.

  3. Automates Accountability: When you see an issue (like a pothole or a broken water pipe), you can report it in seconds. Our AI Accountability Engine then takes over, automatically routing the issue to the correct government office, formatting it as a formal complaint, and most importantly sending automated follow-ups until a response is registered.

How I built it

As an Ideathon project, I focused on building a comprehensive, user-centric, and feasible concept, backed by a high-fidelity prototype.

Challenges I ran into

User research was a challenge, trying out other related apps like, scraping the internet for what people are really looking for and how we can help

Accomplishments that I proud of

I am incredibly proud of creating more than just an idea. Right now it’s just a few screens and i have already mapped out what the app roadmap will look like.

What I learned

I thought designing was easy but I was greatly wrong. From the ideation, to research, to visualizing what the app will be. I learned so much about design just by building this.

What's next for Beacon

My vision for Beacon is to become the essential platform for civic engagement in Nigeria. Here is the roadmap:

  • Phase 1 (Next 2 Months): Secure initial grant funding and develop the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) focusing on the "Know Your Reps" and "Accountability Engine" features. Launch a pilot program in Lagos.

  • Phase 2: Integrate the "Budget Unboxed" AI feature and expand to three more states.
