Inspiration

Beacon, a project for people with Anorexia Nervosa, was inspired by the very people who suffer from it. Seeing how the pandemic made remote communication, work, and even therapy sessions normal, why not centralize all of it in one platform? This is all carefully designed in a way that makes it soothing to navigate through, this was done through non-offensive design, animal themes, and general navigation through the app.

What it does

It's a centralized app where a patient, aptly called a Penguin from their mascot, can add their therapist or dietitian (Owl), as well as their friends (Bunny) and families (Polar Bear) to their digital healing place. Where they can check up on their loved one, create and view therapy schedules, and allow a penguin to post their food to the dietitian. For owls, it can be a place where they track the progress of their penguins, and have an overview of their sessions for the day.

How we built it

It's main focus is it's design and functionality, the developers, which we like to label ourselves as Seals, focused on lessening the user friction in order for the users to focus on their treatment. As such, a lot of time was spent on the user interface on Figma. This was then developed in react native since this is meant to be a mobile app. Further expansion on the backend would be integrated with Supabase for basic account authorization and PostgreSQL for its database.

Challenges we ran into

We knew we had to get the UI right, we hesitated a lot on it, one of the developers almost scrapped the design we went with, but was convinced by the other developer to trust the process and that it actually fits what we're looking for.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We in our field of software engineering has a lot of focus on the technicals, but we're proud of upskilling our creative side with Beacon, with most of all, a great purpose to push our motivation.
