Inspiration
People lose hours every day to apps like TikTok and Instagram. Blocking apps feels like a punishment, so most people turn the blocker off. I wanted to build an app that I would actually use: you earn your screen time by doing good things for yourself.
What it does
Be Serious locks the apps you choose. When you finish a goal, like a workout, a fast, or drinking enough water, you earn minutes to use them. You can track meals with a photo and join small private groups with friends to keep each other going.
How I built it
It's an IOS app made with Swift and SwiftUI. It uses Apple's Screen Time tools to lock and unlock apps. Supabase stores the data and runs the group chats, AI turns a meal photo into calories, and RevenueCat handles subscriptions!
Challenges
The hardest part was getting people to actually lock their apps during onboarding. I fixed this by borrowing ideas from Cal AI and Opal's onboarding: the app first shows people how much time they lose to their phone, then sells the idea of spending this time in better ways before asking for Screen Time access.
What I learned
Small details change how an app feels. I learned to measure things before changing them, and to keep the app simple. Also, run more ads!
