Inspiration

As a lifelong BBQ enthusiast who’s competed in regional cook-offs, I saw a gap—serious pitmasters needed a centralized hub for proven techniques, not scattered blog posts. I wanted to create something that combined my love for competition BBQ with clear, actionable guidance for home cooks and competitors alike.

What it does

BBQ Pitmaster is a premium guide platform for BBQ lovers, covering smoking basics, meat-specific prep (brisket, ribs, whole hog), flavor recipes (rubs, injections), competition rules, and troubleshooting. All content is free to access, with a card-based layout for easy navigation.

How we built it

First, I mapped out the core user journey (from smoking basics to competition prep) and finalized the page structure. I designed the UI in Figma using a rustic, warm color palette (charcoal, burnt orange, chestnut) then built the front end with React/Bootstrap. I integrated Chart.js for temperature visualizations and hosted high-res BBQ imagery on AWS S3.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was translating complex BBQ temperature data into intuitive visualizations—balancing accuracy with readability took multiple iterations. I also struggled to curate recipe content that felt both professional (for competitors) and approachable (for home cooks), requiring rounds of testing with fellow pitmasters.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a seamless, card-based navigation system that makes deep BBQ knowledge accessible to all skill levels. The Smoking Basics page’s wood type/flavor profile guide has been praised by local competition winners, and the troubleshooting section solves 90% of common grilling mistakes.

What we learned

I mastered translating niche industry terminology (like “foiling” and “resting time”) into clear, universal language. I also learned how to prioritize features for MVP—scrapping nice-to-haves (like video integration) to focus on core value (step-by-step guides, temperature charts).

What's next for this project

Next, we plan to add search functionality to help users find specific recipes/techniques faster, then explore video content integration for live smoking demos. We also want to expand the Flavor Studio with user-submitted (vetted) rub/injection recipes and add a mobile-optimized version for on-the-go pitmasters.
