Underserved communities are in pain. We want to raise awareness for this subgroup as they received fewer health care services and social support. The meager resources that were available to them became more scarce during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the closure of organizations like BBCC. This nonprofit organization is currently experiencing a lack of funding and workers after reopening, and it was upsetting to hear since our community needs organizations like this to serve people who were not given the privilege of having a life that is well served. We want to help. We established a website called “BBCC connect” for the patients and doctors to connect with each other. With our elaborately designed poster and the sharing feature of the website, we can spread the word on social media and mouth-to-mouth.
From this 48-hour project, we learned more about how to help these underserved individuals and enhanced our team working and time management skills. We know that there were always sources to help (some great ideas to help with the community); however, the way of communication between the two parties has been lacking – ways for people to be aware of the problem and to know the organization. All this might then lead to a shutdown of the organization.
We came across several challenges during this project. At first, we were challenged by how to raise awareness in the underserved communities since the location they live in might not have information accessible. The solution we found was to create a poster spreading around the neighborhood with simple words highlighting the free service. In addition, the research found that these individuals were actually spending more time on the internet. We then came up with the idea of “BBCC connect” for people to connect better using the internet.
