We started with a challenge from Curiox and wanted to create a toy, that allows children to dive into different worlds: they can experience adventures with firefighters, learn about animals that live in the woods and much more.
Our playing figure "Bazi-Bär" accompanies the children during their journey, the adventure begins when you put a hat on the figure, e.g. a firefighter helmet or a Robin Hood hat. The special thing about "Bazi-Bär": The children can interact with him.
We are a multi-competence team of 5 people: A Programmer, an electronics engineer, a mechanical engineer, a linguist and a journalist. Everyone of us contributed a part to create this product: We build a physical neutral character (a teddy bear) and put some technology in it: a Raspberry as a central computing unit, NCF sensors that can detect different hats, that the bear can wear, as well as gadgets that the child presents to the bear. There is also a small projector in it, that keeps the bear cute and without a display.
By putting a hat on the bear, a specific game starts. Putting on a firefigther helmet for example starts a projected picture of an empty fire truck. Presenting the right physical gadgets (that have also an NFC tag in it), results in a congratulation and an appearance of that gadget in the scene.
We have been consequent in how to ran through a project real quick: Starting with the story and the customers need, identifying our team competences, hiring the missing competences and start hacking together to ran a MVP.
We learned that our toy is for children, which have basically no idea how to use complex technology. The biggest challenge and learning was to think as a child. The goal was to make the product so simple and self-explaining that this technology is just a way to have fun.
Next step is to make it as robust as possible and further explore different worlds.
