Inspiration
BaZi can be difficult to approach in English. Many tools expose a dense chart without explaining the relationships, and some silently invent an Hour Pillar when the birth time is unknown. BaZi Calculator was built to make the calculation understandable while keeping those boundaries honest.
What it does
BaZi Calculator is a free, no-sign-up Four Pillars tool.
- Enter a birth date, time, and city to calculate the Year, Month, Day, and Hour Pillars.
- See hidden stems, the Day Master, Five Elements, Ten Gods, and a luck-cycle timeline when an exact birth time is available.
- Read a plain-English explanation and an optional AI-powered interpretation after the chart is calculated.
- If the birth time is unknown, receive an honest Three-Pillar chart instead of a guessed Hour Pillar.
The tool has no paywall and does not save personal chart results.
How we built it
The application is built with Next.js, React, and TypeScript and deployed on Vercel. A local BaZi engine performs the deterministic chart calculation before any interpretation layer runs. Server-side provider boundaries handle location and reading services, while Zod validates data at application boundaries. The interface is responsive and designed to keep chart relationships readable on both desktop and mobile.
Challenges
The main challenge was preserving calculation truth across date, time, city, historical timezone, and true-solar-time rules without exposing that complexity as an unreadable form. A second challenge was keeping deterministic calculation separate from interpretation, so an unavailable AI service can never change or block the chart itself.
What we learned
A useful astrology calculator needs to show its uncertainty instead of hiding it. The unknown-time path became a product feature: returning three truthful pillars is more helpful than presenting four precise-looking pillars built on a guess.
