I was inspired by my mother. She is a nurse in one of the most affected counties in the Bay Area, Santa Clara county. Hearing her talk about what her co-workers have to go through and learning more from news outlets made me want to create something, even if it was simple.
What it does
It displays the confirmed cases of Covid-19 in counties in the greater San Francisco, Bay Area, California.
How I built it
I split up the application into two repositories. A client and a backend server. The Client is built in React and makes an HTTP call to the backend server that is built in Java using Spring Boot. My primary data source was the COVID-19 repository made by Johns Hopkins University (https://github.com/CSSEGISandData/COVID-19) and stored on a MySQL database.
Challenges I ran into
Time. I am currently a senior at my university with multiple projects and assignments to finish before I graduate. My schoolwork ate up most of my time and was not able to get this project finished as quickly as I wanted it.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I built something that could hopefully be useful to someone during this pandemic.
What I learned
How to create a backend service using Spring Boot and MySQL and how to use React hooks.
What's next for Bay Area Covid-19 Tracker
Deployment. That's the only thing I didn't finish during this project. Hopefully, I have something up soon.
