Inspiration

90% of plastic is not recycled and trash overflow is a major issue in cities. Plus, waste awareness is undervalued in education. BOB addresses these topics.

What it does

BOB encourages users to scan their waste products to find if they are recyclable or not. It provides advice and facts about the packaging based on the barcode. It then opens a bin for the user to use if they have a recyclable item. The bin also tracks how full it is, and prevents use if at capacity.

How we built it

We used Streamlit and Arduino for programming. Electronic components used include an Arduino board, IR sensor, joystick, and ultrasound sensor. Google Gemini AI API was used to assess the recyclability of a product and provide insight.

Challenges we ran into

We encountered several challenges before finalizing our approach, often having to discard ideas for various reasons. Understanding the hardware took time, and we also dedicated significant effort to developing high-quality software.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Made a happy BOB with numerous electronic components and a clean software to operate it.

What we learned

Using various technologies and Arduino.
