Inspiration

Our inspirations included Super Smash Brothers/Super Smash Flash 2, and Brawlhalla.

What it does

Our game is a platform fighter for the Avatar: The Last Airbender roster. Our game features a beautiful opening screen, and a play button, that allows you to pick a character from the roster. Our only playable character of current is Zuko, who is fully animated and has a move set of directionally-inputted fire-bending moves.

How we built it

We coded the game using the Godot game engine, which started with designing a title and roster screen. We then designed the platform that characters fought on, as well as the background. We also made a battle theme song. After, came the real challenge -- building Zuko. Before programming him, we had to make character sprites as well as animate our character using a texture packer. Afterwards, we coded the physics of his character and the stock rules which determines how a player wins/loses. Then, we added an end screen for the winner.

Challenges we ran into

Making the art for this game was extremely arduous -- making a spritesheet for any character is time-consuming, including the fact that we are not specially equipped for any graphic design. Then, animating the character sprite sheet and coding the physics was hard, but it worked out.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud the game as a whole; we celebrate the creation of Zuko as our first playable character as well as our music creation skills and graphic art expertise.

What we learned

Making quality online team-projects requires that everyone have similar background skills, as well as technological access. Graphic art was difficult to collaborate on because 1 person had to work on entire spreadsheets while nobody else had the necessary tools -- hardware and software -- to help out. Making online projects is also expensive -- there's only so many free trials to avoid the costs of file sharing and use of different programs.

What's next for Battle Between Elements

Battle Between Elements is due for significant UI changes, as well as expanding the roster, beginning with the entirety of Team Avatar. Then, Battle Between Elements would add more maps, making this a great offline, local couch party game. Then, we could begin working on our story mode.
