Inspiration
While the premise of a bathroom-reviewing app seems silly at first glance, Bathrooms @ Brown provides information that is useful for people looking for bathrooms that meet specific needs: for example, gender-neutral, single-occupancy, or wheelchair accessible bathrooms. For instance, someone might specifically seek out a nearby single-occupancy bathroom because of religious reasons, because they're a parent with a child, etc.
What it does
We have a map in a website and pins representing bathrooms placed on this map. You can filter by building, gender, wheelchair accessibility, and single occupancy bathrooms. The map also tracks your location so you can see where the closest bathrooms are!
How we built it
The frontend is built with TypeScript and React and sources map data from the MapBox API. The project has a Java Spring Boot backend that connects to a MongoDB collection to store user reviews.
Challenges we faced
It was a time sink! (pun intended)
What's next for Bathrooms @ Brown
We're hoping to grow our bathroom dataset and add support for user-submitted ratings and reviews. We also plan to add more accessibility features to our app, such as locations of elevators/wheelchair lifts. We're flushed with excitement to further improve Bathrooms @ Brown!
