Inspiration

We took inspiration from the game Berzerk, which is another top down shooter that was played on the atari. We thought about a way that we could implement echo into the project, and finally landed on the idea of echolocation with bats. Our design took inspiration from stardew valley's sprite visuals.

What it does

In this game you play as a bat to protect your cave from intruding fruits. You start with a pistol, but can pick up other guns in chests around the map. You must echolocate to see your surroundings since it is a dark cave.

How we built it

On Friday, nobody on our team had any experience with unity, c#, or game design. By the time we finished, we now all have a basic understanding of all of these concepts. This has served as a learning opportunity and a chance to explore our creativity.

Challenges we ran into

We had issues at the beginning of development where some settings were preventing the program from operating correctly on each others' systems. We also had a hard time with working on the same project at the same time. It was difficult to edit different things so that we didn't cause merge errors. This was especially rough at the beginning because there wasn't enough things created so that everyone could work on their own task. We also have the big issue of entities clipping into walls in the game. We couldn't find a sure workaround for this in the time allocated.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Honestly, we are just proud that we created something that is complete and able to be submitted. Going into this, we didn't expect to even have a finished product. We doubted that we could even go down this path when coding began on Friday and none of us knew where to start. However, we pushed through and created a game that we are proud to call our first of many in the future.

What we learned

We all now have a basic understanding of the C# coding language, Unity engine, and general game development.

What's next for Bat Suckers

The question is more what's next for our team. This is a basic project where we were getting used to the unity engine and C# language. We hope that we can make better and more complex games together in the future. Bat Suckers will likely not have a future in development, but it will symbolize the beginning of our game development projects.
