Inspiration
The idea for BasketWise started during a data mining course, where I learned about the Apriori algorithm. At first, it felt theoretical. Later, when I explored product bundling, it became more practical.
I realized that many small and mid-sized businesses have transaction data but don’t use it properly. Advanced analysis is often expensive and done by consulting firms. This gap motivated me to build BasketWise.
What it does
BasketWise analyzes transaction data to understand which products are bought together.
It helps to identify:
- Products frequently purchased together
- Customer buying patterns
- Opportunities to improve product grouping and increase order value
The goal is to turn raw data into simple and useful insights.
How we built it
The system was built as an end-to-end data pipeline:
- Cleaned and prepared raw transaction data
- Converted data into basket format
- Applied market basket analysis (Apriori algorithm)
- Extracted patterns and key metrics
- Presented results in a clear and structured format
The focus was on building a scalable and modular workflow.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was performance.
Market basket analysis required creating a sparse matrix from transaction data. As the dataset grew, processing became slow.
Optimizing performance and handling large data was a key challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a complete system from raw data to insights
- Applied a theoretical algorithm to a real-world problem
- Identified useful patterns in transaction data
- Balanced both technical and business aspects
What we learned
- How to build an end-to-end data pipeline
- How to apply theory in real scenarios
- How to extract business insights from data
- The importance of scalability and performance
What's next for BasketWise: Transaction Insights for Better Baskets
Next steps include:
- Improving performance for larger datasets
- Adding better metrics and recommendations
- Building a more user-friendly interface
- Testing with real businesses and improving based on feedback
The long-term goal is to make this type of analysis accessible without expensive consulting.
