Inspiration
With today's climate on social media, it's important to take breaks every now and then to look after your own mental health. With trending topics becoming more heated, especially in the wake of a pandemic, people who use Twitter may feel more frustrated or mentally drained than usual. This inspired us to create Basil, a bot that takes a step inside your timeline every now and then to give a refreshing reminder that the world isn't just heated debates and controversy.
What it does
Basil tweets an uplifting fact every hour from a list of facts picked out by us.
How I built it
This bot was created using Twitter's API and a Python script, along with Tweepy, a Python library designed for handling Twitter API.
Challenges I ran into
Our biggest challenge was coming up with the idea of Basil and how they can impact and encourage healthy conversation on Twitter. Understanding how Twitter's API works was a challenge as well!
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We're proud that we got to learn how to utilize Twitter's API to create a Twitter bot! We've always been curious but never knew exactly how they were implemented.
What I learned
We learned how to utilize Twitter's API to create a cute automated bot.
What's next for BasilBot
We have many more ideas in store for Basil! For one, we would love to see Basil analyze the day's trending topics and provide a cute fact related to that topic. We also would like to automate the list of facts to be tweeted by Basil. Along with that, we want to look into connecting a dedicated server to Basil so they can make tweets for as long as they can!
