BaseSignal: Project Overview
Inspiration
The modern job search is broken. High-agency technical professionals are forced into a reactive, passive cycle—spraying resumes into black holes and waiting in silence. We were inspired by the idea that job seeking shouldn't be a game of hope, but a signal problem. Just like a radar operator interprets blips on a screen, a job seeker should be able to decode the noise of the market to find exactly where their value lands with impact. BaseSignal was born from the frustration of ghosting, opaque ATS filters, and the desperate need for a tool that treats the user like a strategic operator, not a supplicant.
What it does
BaseSignal is the intelligence command center for technical job seekers.
It replaces static spreadsheets and passive trackers with a dynamic system that interprets the "signals" of your search:
- Signal Inbox: Consolidates all hiring communications into a unified view, tracking "Communication Velocity" to predict the health of every opportunity.
- Aging Intelligence: Automatically flags opportunities that have gone cold (7, 14, 21 days) and generates AI-powered follow-up drafts to restart conversations.
- AI Calibration Coach: Analyzes your full search history—response rates by role, company size, and channel—to provide a weekly "Calibration Score" and specific pivot recommendations.
- Target Profiles: Allows seekers to A/B test different professional narratives, tracking which "version" of their story generates the strongest market signal.
Crucially, BaseSignal introduces the Deferred Commitment Model: users get 90 days of Pro-tier intelligence for free, paying only when they successfully land a job. We don't win unless you win.
How we built it
We built BaseSignal as a high-fidelity frontend prototype using a modern, component-driven architecture to prioritize user experience and convey the "intelligence" aesthetic.
- Frontend Stack: React 18 + TypeScript + Vite for a fast, type-safe development environment.
- Styling & UI: Tailwind CSS for atomic, responsive styling, combined with shadcn/ui for accessible, polished components (Cards, Accordions, Switches, Progress bars).
- State & Routing: React Router DOM for seamless navigation between the Command Center, Signal Inbox, AI Coach, and Settings.
- Authentication: A mock authentication gate (with a custom "email = password" validation for rapid prototyping) to simulate the user journey from landing page to dashboard.
- Data: Rich placeholder and demo data to illustrate the core concepts—nested messages under opportunities, calibration metrics, and aging alerts.
Challenges we ran into
- Making the Abstract Tangible: The core concept of a "signal" is abstract. Our biggest challenge was designing a UI that makes "Communication Velocity" and "Aging" feel visceral and actionable, rather than just another analytics chart. We solved this by using color-coded signal types (Signal, Alert, Action) and contextual language.
- Balancing Complexity with Clarity: A job search has dozens of variables. We had to resist the urge to build a dashboard covered in widgets. Instead, we focused on a "Command Center" metaphor—showing only the most critical intelligence needed for the next decision.
- The "Deferred Commitment" UX: Designing the pricing and trust model was a challenge. We needed to communicate a novel payment structure (pay later, or pay on success) without confusing the user. This required careful copywriting and a dedicated "BaseSignal Bet" section to frame it as confidence, not a catch.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- The Deferred Commitment Model: We are incredibly proud of designing a monetization strategy that structurally aligns our success with the user's success. It turns a potential barrier (cost during unemployment) into a powerful trust-building mechanism.
- The Elevator Pitch: Distilling the entire concept into a single, punchy line: "BaseSignal: The job search command center. Replace spreadsheets with AI signal analysis and aging alerts. Calibrate your strategy to prove your value is titanium, not recycled foil." (182 characters).
- Cohesive "Intelligence" Aesthetic: We established a unique visual identity—dark mode, monospace fonts, "signal-active" emerald greens, and radar-inspired icons—that makes the app feel like a professional tool, not a consumer toy.
- Modular Architecture: The separation of concerns (Dashboard, Coach, Inbox, Settings) within a persistent
AppLayoutcreates a scalable foundation for future backend integration.
What we learned
- Agency is the Product: We learned that job seekers don't just need a database; they need a narrative. The tool isn't just for storing data—it's for telling the user what to do next. The "AI Coach" feature is the most important page because it provides that narrative.
- Pricing is Psychology: The Deferred Commitment Model taught us that pricing can be a feature. By removing upfront financial risk, we learned that we could potentially achieve higher conversion and retention than traditional freemium models.
- Contextual Triggers: We identified that the conversion from Free to Pro isn't just about feature gating; it's about cognitive load. When a user has 8+ active applications, the pain of manual tracking becomes the trigger for automation.
What's next for BaseSignal
- Real Email Integration: Implementing OAuth read-only access for Gmail/Outlook to truly automate the Signal Inbox with domain matching and keyword detection.
- Backend AI Engine: Moving from mock data to a real LLM-powered coach that analyzes longitudinal data and generates dynamic follow-up drafts.
- B2B Data Layer: Once we reach critical mass, anonymizing user search data to sell aggregated demand-side insights to recruiters and HR tech platforms—creating a second revenue stream.
- Mobile Experience: Developing a companion mobile app for real-time push notifications on aging alerts and new signals.
- Interview & Offer Management: Expanding the pipeline to include interview scheduling tracking, salary negotiation playbooks, and offer comparison matrices.
