Baseball is America's pastime, but it can be challenging for new fans to understand its complexity and stay engaged. As a team of tech enthusiasts and baseball fans, we wanted to bridge this gap by creating an AI-powered companion that makes baseball more accessible, engaging, and fun for everyone - from casual viewers to die-hard stats nerds.

What it does

BaseballBuddy transforms baseball viewing with:

Real-time game tracking with AI commentary in three styles: Casual Fan, Stats Nerd, and History Buff Interactive field visualization and pitch analysis Player comparison tool with comprehensive statistics Live win probability calculations and game analytics Achievement system with predictions and points Personalized learning mode for baseball basics AI Expert Chat for answering any baseball-related questions

How we built it

We developed BaseballBuddy using:

React.js with hooks for the frontend interface Tailwind CSS for responsive design MLB Stats API for real-time game data Google's Generative AI (Gemini) for intelligent commentary Firebase for authentication Framer Motion for smooth animations Recharts for data visualization Custom algorithms for win probability and analytics

Challenges we ran into

  1. MLB API Integration: Working with complex, nested data structures and handling various game states (live, historical, upcoming)
  2. Real-time Updates: Managing state updates and data synchronization across components without overwhelming the API
  3. AI Commentary Balance: Tuning the Gemini model to provide engaging yet accurate commentary while maintaining distinct personality styles
  4. Performance Optimization: Implementing efficient caching and data management for roster and player statistics
  5. User Experience: Creating an intuitive interface that presents complex data without overwhelming users
