Inspiration

We noticed that people want to learn new skills all the time whether it be cooking, coding, fixing things, playing instruments etc. but classes are often expensive, and online tutorials aren’t personal or interactive. We thought: why not create a platform where people can trade skills directly and learn from each other? That’s how Bartr was born.

What it does

Bartr is a barter-based skill swapping platform. Users post skills they can teach and skills they want to learn. The platform matches people so they can trade knowledge instead of money. It works with any kind of skill, from baking sourdough bread to coding a website, to playing the ukulele — making learning diverse, personal, and collaborative. Users can also join small trust circles to learn in groups.

How we built it

We built Bartr using Lovable, which handled both the user interface and backend setup. Lovable allowed us to create a clean, intuitive UI for posting, browsing, and swapping skills, while also managing the database connections that store user profiles, skill posts, and group activity information. Using Lovable Cloud, all user data is saved securely and updated in real time, ensuring a smooth and reliable experience. By leveraging Lovable for both frontend and backend, we were able to focus on the platform’s core functionality: helping users find people to barter skills with and connect with diverse groups for collaborative activities.

Challenges we ran into

A lot of the core functionality didn’t work perfectly through Lovable, so we had to debug issues ourselves and manually adjust certain parts to make the platform work as intended. Figuring out how to connect the databases, ensure user data updated correctly, and make skill swapping and group creation functional required extra problem-solving and hands-on debugging throughout the hackathon.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully built a fully functional skill swapping platform using Lovable for both the UI and backend. Users can now connect with others to barter skills and join diverse groups for collaborative activities. We implemented a secure and reliable database setup with Lovable Cloud, which updates user data in real time. The platform has a clean and intuitive interface, making it simple and enjoyable for users to post, browse, and swap skills. Despite facing technical challenges, we were able to debug and manually adjust functionality, ensuring the platform works as intended.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we learned how to rapidly prototype a functional platform using Lovable. We discovered the importance of debugging and problem-solving when core functionality doesn’t work as expected. We also learned how to structure a user-friendly interface while managing databases and real-time updates through Lovable Cloud. Beyond technical skills, we gained experience in collaboration and project planning, making decisions quickly under time constraints to deliver a working product.

What's next for Bartr

In the future, we plan to expand the platform to support more users and a wider variety of skills. We want to make it easier for users to find and join groups with diverse abilities for collaborative activities. Additionally, we hope to enhance the user experience by adding features like skill recommendations, notifications for new matches, and improved group management. Ultimately, we aim to grow Bartr into a thriving community where people can learn, teach, and collaborate seamlessly.
