Inspiration

In today’s fast-paced world, we often overlook the talents and skills that exist right next door. While we spend time scrolling through online courses or tutorial videos, we miss out on the rich knowledge base within our own communities. We asked ourselves — what if your next teacher lived just down the street? That simple question sparked the idea of Barter — a hyperlocal platform where people can connect through skill-sharing, foster real human relationships, and build stronger, more resourceful neighborhoods.

What it does

Barter is a web app that allows users to share, teach, and learn skills within their own locality. Users can:

  • Sign up or log in to their account
  • Explore a live map showing skills offered by nearby users
  • Search for specific skills and connect directly with local contributors
  • Post a skill they’re willing to teach, complete with category, contact info, and availability
  • Manage their posted skills and personal profile
  • In-app chat facility for communication The app encourages community-driven learning, breaking the barriers between teacher and student, and turning neighbors into collaborators.

How we built it

The whole webapp was vibe coded using BOLT.new

  • Firstly, the basic templates were coded,
  • then the authentication and database connection using supabase,
  • then the Map integration and skills posting,
  • enhancing UI/UX
  • finding and fixing bugs
  • deployed using Netlify

Challenges we ran into

There were quite many challenges faced in this one month journey:

  • Integrating real-time updates with the map and database was initially tricky
  • setting up authentication properly
  • Ensuring location accuracy and maintaining privacy of users while still making the experience interactive
  • Designing a simple yet functional UI that works well across devices
  • designing appropriate prompts to get the most optimal output from BOLT

Through trial, feedback, and iteration, I was able to overcome these hurdles and shape Barter into a usable prototype.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully created a fully functional skill-sharing platform from scratch
  • Turned a community-first idea into a working solution that could impact real lives
  • learnt and developed a scalable web app using no-code tool
  • implement a functioning in-app chat facility

Seeing the idea evolve into an interactive tool that people can actually use gives us a real sense of pride

What we learned

  • vibe coding and prompt engineering
  • Working with real-time databases and integrating them with frontend logic
  • handling authentications and handling fetch errors properly

What's next for Barter

Though the basic prototype is functional and working properly, there are many points of development for this project:

  • Fine tune the current features to omit bugs present
  • create a mobile-app version for better utility
  • implementing AI for suggestions and understanding user choice and patter
  • implementing a in-app payment gateway for paid tutorials
  • create a revenue model for the app and upscaling it

The goal is to turn Barter into a thriving ecosystem where learning is personal, local, and shared
