Inspiration

Inspired by the common student dilemma of finding budget-friendly social spots and the annoyance of unexpected high covers, I envisioned a platform to centralize bar deals and crowd levels, making nightlife seamless and economical. This project, driven by the desire to foster a vibrant and interconnected Mizzou student community, encourages active participation in updating daily specials and covers, enhancing the collaborative spirit while ensuring everyone has a great time without breaking the bank

How we built it

This project commenced with UI/UX design in Figma, transitioning to backend setup with Flask for routing and handling requests. The HTML and CSS reflected the Figma mockups, meticulously styled to ensure user-friendliness. The application was successfully deployed on Heroku, making it accessible online. While time was a constraint, the deployment marks a significant milestone, and the structure established provides a solid foundation for future functionalities, inching closer to the envisioned community-driven platform for Mizzou students to share and discover lively, budget-friendly nightlife options

Challenges we ran into

After starting this project in a group some unanticipated events led to making this hackathon a solo mission, which greatly increased the stress and workload I had. As a novice developer, I had never done anything remotely close to this. Between the steep learning curve of Figma for design components and trying to attempt my first Heroku deployment was very tough. Some of the hardest challenges I had to go through were ensuring that the website was rendering properly, handling hosting issues, and doing back-end development for the first time. Definitely, the hardest part for me was learning how to use Figma. Being a programmer I wasn't keen on the creative side, but in the end, it definitely paid off

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Although the outcome wasn't as polished as envisioned due to the steep learning curve and unforeseen solo endeavor, the journey has been rich with learning. From being a novice to mastering the basics of Figma and attempting a Heroku deployment, every hurdle has been a stepping stone. The creation of a functional, although basic, website from scratch is a milestone that reflects the potential for growth and the foundation for more complex future projects. This project is a testament to the learning and perseverance ingrained in the process, making every challenge encountered a celebrated accomplishment.

What we learned

Through this project, I learned how to use Figma for design, got a taste of back-end development, and navigated through deploying a project on Heroku. I also gained valuable insights into project management, especially while working solo, and the importance of adaptability and preparation in project execution.

What's next for BarHopper

Moving forward, BarHopper aims to incorporate user sign-ins, and authentication using school emails, and enable users to contribute by editing the website. Moreover, integrating geolocation services to track bar busyness in real-time is on the horizon, adding a new dimension to the user experience, and making it more interactive and informative. Additionally, enhancing the website's responsiveness for dynamic resizing across different screens is a priority. This will ensure a seamless user experience irrespective of the device used, making BarHopper more accessible and user-friendly. Also a phone app would make this far more accessible to Mizzou students.
