Inspiration

Every day in Saudi Arabia, good food from restaurants, bakeries, events, and homes gets thrown away, while other people need meals. The problem isn't a lack of food. It's that there's no fast way to connect the two.

What it does

Baraka Share is a free English and Arabic website. Restaurants and families post their extra food in under a minute, and charities or neighbours claim it before it expires. A live counter shows how many meals have been saved.

How we built it

I built it as a single web page with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It has a built-in translation system with right-to-left support for Arabic, countdown timers for expiring food, city filters, and browser storage to save listings. I used AI assistance (Claude) to help write the code, and hosted it for free on GitHub Pages.

Challenges we ran into

I had never coded before, so I had to learn how websites, GitHub, and hosting work from scratch. Making the Arabic version feel natural meant flipping the whole layout, and my first launch showed a blank page until I fixed the file name and hosting settings.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I went from no coding experience to a working, live website that solves a real problem. It's bilingual, works on phones, and is designed to be simple enough for anyone to use.

What we learned

I learned the basics of web development, how to design for accessibility and two languages, and how to take an idea from a community problem to a working demo.

What's next for Baraka Share

A shared database so everyone sees the same listings, verified charity accounts, a map view, WhatsApp pickup alerts, and partnerships with restaurants and food-rescue organisations.
