Inspiration

Managing finances should be a cinch; however, for many people, bank statements still come as PDFs, making it a pain to analyze, share, or import into any accounting tool. I wanted to tackle this issue with a tool that eliminates manual copy-paste effort and renders financial data usable immediately.

What it does

The Bank Statement Converter automatically converts PDF bank statements into Excel and CSV files that are clean and structured. The Bank Statement Converter supports thousands of banks globally, detects such columns as date, description, and amount, and sends practically usable files in seconds.

How I built it

The project is a lightweight web tool with a clean interface and a capable backend engine that accurately parses PDFs. It extracts tabular data and applies formatting rules to produce Excel or CSV output. It focuses on speed and accuracy with privacy, not storing any data after conversion.

Challenges I ran into

-Different bank statement formats from different countries. -Ensuring accuracy even for statements that had odd layouts, merged rows, or scanned PDFs. -Keeping the tool free and available for everyone while costing the performance. -Building trust, as financial data is delicate and users will require that assurance.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

-Making the tool fully free with no limitations. -Support for multiple formats (PDF into Excel/CSV). -High accuracy with a wide variety of statement layouts. -A simple tool with no sign-up that saves people hours of manual work.

What I learned

That there is great demand for simple tools that solve very specific problems. The importance of UI clarity when users upload sensitive documents. That the building of trust and transparency goes hand in hand with technical correctness. An unending process of optimization for PDF parsing goes hand in hand with testing.

What's next for Bank Statement Converter

-Adding support for scanned image PDFs with OCR. -Integration enhancement with accounting platforms such as QuickBooks and Xero. -Batch conversion improvement for multiple statements in a business setting. -Lightweight mobile app version exploration.
