Inspiration
When a band rehearses, everyone reads chords off their own phone, and every session runs into the same friction: which song are we playing, where are we starting, and what key is it in. Someone is always a verse behind, or reading a different version.
We wanted the simplest reliable shared rehearsal screen: one person leads, everyone else follows.
What it does
- The leader creates a band and adds songs.
- They start a session and a QR code appears.
- The others scan it. No account needed to follow.
- The leader picks a song and it opens on every phone in the room.
- The leader jumps to the second chorus and the whole band goes with them.
That flow is the whole product. It is deliberately not another feature-heavy songbook.
How we built it
Flutter with Cloud Firestore, talking to Firestore directly through repositories rather than a bespoke REST layer. A companion web editor on Firebase Hosting lets you paste songs from a laptop via a 24h share token.
Two decisions did most of the work.
Sync semantic position, not pixels. A phone and a 13-inch tablet do not share a scroll offset: font sizes, wrapping and chord visibility all differ. BandSync syncs a semantic location (the current section, the percentage through the song) and each device renders that in its own layout. The guitarist can show chords, the singer can show lyrics only, someone else can use large text, and everyone still sits at the same place in the song.
Song entry is the real product risk. A perfect sync engine with painful content entry fails. So you paste anything, chords-above-lyrics or ChordPro, and it gets parsed, cleaned and split into proper sections. Paste a batch and it splits into separate songs.
Monetization: leader-pays, built on RevenueCat
One person has the problem, but the whole band has to install the solution, so followers stay free and account-free and only the leader can buy. BandSync Pro removes ads for every member of that band and lifts the free-tier caps.
Because members never authenticate, they have no store identity to check an entitlement against. The leader's device resolves the entitlement through RevenueCat and mirrors its expiry onto the shared band document, which is the only Pro signal a member's device reads.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It shipped. BandSync is live on Google Play (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeitsolutions.syncset), with the leader-pays subscription live, and the iOS build is in App Store review. A companion web editor runs on Firebase Hosting. The sync loop works over a phone hotspot and reconnects on its own when a screen locks or a member drops.
