Inspiration

As a team of college students deeply nerded out by blockchain technology, we often found ourselves thinking about how blockchain tech could be incorporated into classic games we grew up playing – particularly the Oregon Trail. This game was all about making strategic choices, dealing with random events, and immersing oneself in a compelling story.

Our initial concept was to create a platform where players could wager cryptocurrency on various games. We had an initial idea of a crypto wagering platform, but legal red tape made us rethink. We realized we wanted to do something more unique and fun, something that wasn't just about betting crypto. That's when we hit upon combining our love for those old-school games with the cool tech of blockchain.

This challenge led us to a pivotal moment of reevaluation. We realized that while the adrenaline rush of betting was appealing, what truly resonated with us was the aspect of skill and strategy – the core elements that made games like Oregon Trail so captivating.

We pivoted our idea towards developing skill-based games. This shift was further solidified by recent legal precedents favoring skill-based gaming. Our vision began to take a new shape – to create a platform that wasn’t just about gambling, but about challenging oneself, honing skills, and engaging in stories.

Our goal became clear: we wanted to revolutionize skill-based gaming by infusing it with maximum fairness and transparency, something we believed was sorely missing in the current gaming landscape. To achieve this, we turned to Chainlink VRF (Verifiable Random Function), a tool that would allow us to bring provable randomness and transparency into our games.

How we built it

Learning and Implementing Smart Contracts: Our journey began with the challenge of learning how to build smart contracts from scratch. To understand the basics, we started with a simple coin flip game. This initial project was crucial, as it helped us understand the fundamentals of smart contract development and how to incorporate Chainlink VRF (Verifiable Random Function) for provable randomness. This foundational knowledge paved the way for the development of our more complex game, Space Trail.

Chainlink VRF Integration for Fairness: The core of BambooBets' technological innovation lies in our use of Chainlink VRF. This integration ensures that every game outcome is provably random, fair, and transparent. By solving the common issue of trust in digital gaming, we've provided players with an assurance that every game they play is based on chance and not manipulated.

Using Kelly Criterion for Betting Mechanics: To manage betting in our games, especially in determining the maximum bet, we employed the Kelly Criterion. This mathematical formula helped us calculate the optimal bet size based on the payout odds and the total funds available in the contract. This approach not only enhanced the fairness of the betting process but also ensured the financial stability and longevity of the game's ecosystem.

Front-End Development with React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS: Tailwind CSS, with its utility-first approach, further enhanced our ability to create a modern, responsive design. These three technologies synergized perfectly, allowing us to efficiently develop an interface that was not only visually appealing but also intuitive and user-friendly. The blend of React's component-based architecture, TypeScript's type safety, and Tailwind's design simplicity significantly streamlined our development process.

Node Provider Selection: To ensure reliable and efficient interaction with the blockchain, we selected Alchemy as our node provider. Alchemy's node provider and API provided the necessary support for our backend processes, especially for listening to smart contract events and managing blockchain interactions.

Polygon Mumbai Testnet: This choice offered us a practical and efficient environment to test and refine our platform. Polygon's Mumbai testnet, known for its scalability and low transaction costs, provided us with the perfect setting to experiment and debug our smart contracts and blockchain integrations in real-time, without the expense associated with mainnet deployment.

Enhancing Trust with ENS Domains: Recognizing the importance of user trust, we integrated ENS (Ethereum Name Service) domains into our platform. By associating BambooBets.eth with our deployer wallet contract address, we offer users an easy and reliable way to verify that they are interacting with the legitimate BambooBets platform.

Challenges we ran into

We encountered several challenges, among the most significant was dealing with the legal intricacies of crypto wagering. The ever-evolving landscape of blockchain regulation presented a maze of complexities that we had to carefully maneuver. This required extensive research, legal consultations, and a deep understanding of both national and international laws to ensure compliance and the integrity of our platform.

On the technical front, the task of integrating blockchain technology into our gaming platform was a challenge at first. It was difficult because none of us had prior experience writing smart contracts, and we had to learn from the ground up.

Another technical challenge we faced was related to the node provider. Initially, we utilized the user's wallet node provider, which seemed like a straightforward approach. However, this led to unexpected complications, particularly in listening to the contract's events from our backend. It became clear that relying on the user's node provider wasn't viable for a robust and reliable gaming service. This realization led us to transition to using our own node provider using Alchemy's service.

We also faced the challenge of integrating blockchain technology in a way that didn't compromise the user experience. Our goal was to create a platform that was not only technologically advanced and fair but also user-friendly and engaging. Balancing the technical aspects of blockchain with the intuitive and enjoyable aspects of game design was a delicate dance. We had to ensure that the complexities of the technology didn't overshadow the simplicity and pleasure of the gaming experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Coding and Deploying Smart Contracts: One of our most important accomplishments is the successful development of smart contracts, despite starting with no prior experience.

Evolution of Game Design: We are incredibly proud of the design evolution of our app. The process wasn't straightforward; it involved several iterations, each informed by each other's input, testing, technical feasibility, and our creative vision.

Team Dynamics and Collaboration: The synergy and collaboration within our team has been great. We've managed to blend different skills, perspectives, and ideas harmoniously. Our ability to work diligently, even through challenges, has been crucial in the development of BambooBets.

Scoping: We are proud of how we navigated and overcame the various technical and design challenges in order to complete our project on time.

What we learned

One of the most significant areas of learning was in the realm of smart contract creation using Solidity and the implementation of Web 3.0 technologies. Grappling with Chainlink's technology, particularly its Verifiable Random Function (VRF), was both challenging and rewarding. It helped us to understand and apply complex blockchain concepts to ensure fairness and transparency in our games.

Another crucial learning aspect was the art of consensus-building within our diverse team. Faced with varying opinions and perspectives, we learned the importance of effective communication, collaboration, and finding common ground. This process was integral to our decision-making and helped foster a stronger, more cohesive team. Additionally, navigating the legal landscape of gaming and blockchain was enlightening.
