The outline

Our project empowers non-native English speakers and illiterate American citizens during the voting process. Many illiterate voters or voters with limited English proficiency struggle to understand the voting process, limiting their ability to make informed decisions. As a result, these voters often feel excluded from the democratic process, infringing upon their right to vote.

As students who all have non-native English-speaking relatives, we have watched our family members express a sense of embarrassment or hesitancy to vote because they have to rely on others to understand the ballot. We believe that every voter should have equal access to information—in particular access to information on their ballot—that would enable them to make informed voting decisions, regardless of their literacy level or language proficiency.

Our project is a web application in the Get Out The Vote Project track that leverages tools like Python, React, Typescript, Tailwind, CSS, Google Cloud APIs (Translate, Text-to-Speech API, Vision), Lambda, and AWS. To use our web app, a user selects their native language (built for internationalization and localization), takes a picture of their ballot when prompted, and then is taken to a page where they can read or listen to the text on their ballot, which has been translated to their native language.

As the political ecosystem becomes more polarizing and divisive, we envision our project becoming a widely used tool that helps illiterate voters and non-native speakers vote confidently, knowing they’re shaping the future of their communities and country. In the future, we’d like to incorporate visual aids and provide real-time updates on political events and candidates in our users' native languages. This will not only improve the voting experience for non-native speakers and illiterate voters but also reduce the costs of adding more languages for ballots or hiring more bilingual poll workers.
