Inspiration
We wanted to recreate the thrill of crash-style casino games — the kind that are wildly popular on streaming platforms — but as a polished, self-contained browser experience with transparent math. No server, no signup, no hidden odds. Just pure tension in a balloon.
What it does
BalloonBurst is a crash gambling game where players place a bet and launch a balloon. The multiplier climbs exponentially as the balloon rises — cash out in time and you win big, wait too long and it pops. Features include auto cash-out, a purchasable shield power-up (50% chance to save your bet), a crash history strip, dynamic sound design, and a wallet system with add-funds support.
How we built it
Entirely with vanilla HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript — zero frameworks or dependencies. The game visuals are rendered on an HTML5 Canvas with hand-drawn bezier-curve balloons, parallax clouds, twinkling stars, and particle effects. Audio uses the Web Audio API for real-time synthesized tones (the rising pitch that builds tension) plus MP3 files for win/loss stings. The crash point distribution uses an inverse probability formula with a provably fair 3% house edge (97% RTP).
Challenges we ran into
Getting the exponential multiplier curve to feel right was harder than the math. Too fast and rounds end before the tension builds; too slow and it's boring. Tuning the growth rate, balloon animation, and sound pitch to all sync up took iteration. We also had to handle Web Audio API quirks across browsers — autoplay policies, suspended audio contexts, and graceful fallbacks.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The entire game is ~750 lines of JS with no build step — open index.html and you're playing. The crash distribution is mathematically provable (97% RTP regardless of strategy), the visual system smoothly transitions from night sky to deep space as multipliers climb, and the synthesized rising tone that tracks the multiplier creates genuine tension. The shield mechanic adds a strategic layer without breaking the core math.
What we learned
How much game feel depends on things that aren't "the game" — the sound pitch climbing in sync with the multiplier, the balloon color shifting from blue to red, the confetti on a big win, the sad trombone on a loss. We also deepened our understanding of probability distributions in gambling mechanics and how a house edge can be baked into the RNG itself rather than applied after the fact.
What's next for BalloonBurst
- Multiplayer rooms with live chat and shared crash history so players can react together in real time
- Provably fair verification using server-side seeds so players can independently verify each crash point
- Leaderboards and streaks to track biggest wins and longest survival runs
- Mobile-first redesign with touch-optimized controls and haptic feedback on cash-out
- Crypto wallet integration for real-stakes play with on-chain fairness proofs
