Inspiration

Travelers struggle to speak in real situations. Most apps teach vocabulary, not conversation.

What it does

BaliSpeak Lite lets users speak into their phone and get:

• AI replies in Bahasa (voice + text)
• Instant corrections
• English translations

Focus: ordering food in Bali.

How we built it

• Speech-to-text for user input
• LLM for conversation + correction
• Text-to-speech via VALL-E-style API
• Simple mobile UI (1 screen, voice-first)

Challenges we ran into

• Reducing voice latency
• Handling accents / unclear speech
• Keeping responses simple for beginners

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Real-time voice conversation loop works
• Users can improve in seconds
• Clean, focused MVP (no unnecessary features)

What we learned

• Simplicity > features
• Voice UX is critical
• Real conversations are more engaging than flashcards

What's next for BaliSpeak

• More scenarios (taxi, hotel, market)
• Offline mode for travel
• Real-time “live assist” during conversations
• Expand to other countries
