Inspiration
We're student-athletes, and our schedules aren't just school and homework. We have individual classes, practices, games, commuting, eating, recovery, sleep, and responsibilities outside of school. Traditional planners show everything on your calendar, but they don't tell you whether you actually have enough time to complete your work.
What it does
Our app understands our actual class schedule, athletic schedule, and academic workload. It calculates realistic usable time and builds a schedule around it.
How we built it
To begin developing our program, we first identified a problem that we both experience as high school scholar-athletes: balancing academics, athletics, and our personal responsibilities while still making enough time for sleep and other activities. We decided to create a program designed specifically to help student-athletes manage their limited time more effectively. We started with an initial prompt that described our idea for a scholar-athlete life-balancing application, including features such as entering class schedules, practices, games, assignments, study time, sleep goals, and travel time. We then copied this prompt into Emergent, an AI-powered program development platform, which generated an initial version of the application based on our description. Rather than using the first version as our final product, we tested the program and continued editing it to better match our original idea and the needs we wanted it to address. Through this process, we were able to use AI as a development tool while still making decisions about how the program should function and what changes were necessary to improve it.
What's next for BalancedAthlete
Based on the current version of our program, the next step is to continue testing and refining it to ensure that it effectively meets the needs of student-athletes. We plan to evaluate how accurately the program organizes a user's academic, athletic, and personal responsibilities and identify any areas where the scheduling system can be improved. Future development could also include gathering feedback from other student-athletes and using their experiences to make the program more practical and user-friendly. As the program continues to develop, we hope to expand its features while maintaining its main purpose: helping student-athletes better understand how much time they realistically have and create a balanced schedule that supports both their academic success and athletic commitments.
