CommunityConnect: My First Hackathon Journey 🚀
What Inspired Me
This project was born out of a passion for *learning for fun *. I wanted to challenge myself and explore what I could create within the hackathon timeframe. CommunityConnect emerged as an idea to build something meaningful—a platform that connects community members and facilitates volunteering and collaborative support.
What I Learned
This hackathon was transformative for me. I learned the whole project from scratch, and this was my first time participating in a hackathon. I'm so amazed by how much I've grown and what's possible when you push yourself. I can't wait to continue this journey!
Key takeaways:
- Building a complete mobile application with React Native and Expo
- Implementing TypeScript for type-safe code
- Setting up navigation and UI components
- Working under time constraints and rapid iteration
How I Built It
I leveraged modern AI tools to accelerate development, which allowed me to:
- Rapidly prototype features and components
- Get solutions to technical blockers quickly
- Focus on the core functionality and user experience
- Iterate and refine faster than traditional development
The tech stack includes React Native with Expo, TypeScript, React Navigation, and location services for community-based features.
Challenges I Faced
Like any ambitious project, I encountered obstacles:
- Fixing bugs: Debugging cross-platform issues and ensuring consistency across iOS, Android, and web
- Lack of resources: Limited time and computational resources during the hackathon made prioritization crucial
- Balancing scope: Deciding what features to include in the MVP vs. what to defer
These challenges taught me resilience and the importance of focusing on core functionality first.
Highlights & Wins 🎉
The most exciting discovery was leveraging PowerShell and the features inside Visual Studio Code. These tools proved invaluable for:
- Streamlining my development workflow
- Quickly navigating and managing files
- Running scripts and commands efficiently
- Using Copilot AI assistance for coding
The combination of modern IDE features and AI-assisted development significantly boosted my productivity.
Looking Forward
This hackathon experience has ignited my passion for building community-focused applications. I'm excited to continue developing CommunityConnect with more features, better performance, and expanded functionality. The journey doesn't end here—it's just the beginning!
Built with passion, powered by modern tools, and inspired by the desire to make a difference in our communities. ✨
