A lot of others are worried about allergies, gluten restrictions, dairy-free, fat, sugar, and the recent environmental issue with palm oil. We, as a team, noticed that those who can not eat certain food items due to their allergies, tend to not eat things originally made with their food concern allergies. However, we realized that there are other alternatives as well as healthier options for them to eat. We want everyone with food restrictions feel that they still have other open options. As we were making this app, we faced some challenges with having no experience in coding whatsoever. My group attended the Game Making Workshop and we were able to learn a bit about coding and how to make a game on an Android device. After the workshop finished, we had a full working game and used similar codes to work our app. If we still did not know how to make a button work, we either asked a staff member, or looked it up on google. We built an app using the MIT App Inventor and designed our whole entire app on there. On this app, named Balance, we had a first screen for login. The second page had the person's profile with their picture and the allergies and food concerns that they had. Next to each item, there was a check box and an on/off button that they could press if they were allergic to that item. If they turned the button on, then when they go to search a food item, the food that they were concerned about would be highlighted as a way to show them possible hazards if they were to eat it. On the third page, there was a favorited page for the user. The favorites page had the users favorite recipes, food items, or website that they liked. The last page has a scanner and a search bar for the user to type in the item they are about to eat. If there is a bar code on the item, the they can use the bar code scanner to check of any allergies in the food. As a team, we were very proud when we figured out how to make the buttons turn on and off and move from one page to the next. I learned that building an app is not as easy as it looks, but with a lot of motivation and dedication, anything can be possible.
