Inspiration

"UNICEF reported that only 13% of girls in India are aware of menstruation before their first period." This statistic shocked me with its magnitude. Balance Wellness was created to bridge this knowledge gap by offering an inclusive platform accessible to girls from all regions of India. Our aim is to empower girls with essential self-care knowledge and provide a safe space where they can connect with other women who truly understand their journey.

Navigating through their "first period" can be overwhelming, especially for young teens, and Balance Wellness is designed to support them through every stage. Whether it's the first cycle or an ongoing one, this platform allows girls to openly share their experiences, track their symptoms, and receive personalized recommendations. Balance Wellness is here to make sure that every girl feels supported and informed on her menstrual journey.

What it does

It is a friendly, interactive platform designed to support girls experiencing their first periods. It includes a period tracker, symptom manager, remedies, a welcoming community for messaging, and helpful guides on period care essentials. The website’s resources aim to make every aspect of the menstrual journey simpler and provide comforting advice for self-care and reassurance.

How we built it

Balance Wellness was built using Python and Django for the backend, with JavaScript for the frontend to create a dynamic user experience. Tailwind CSS, along with HTML, helped me design a welcoming and clean user interface. Additionally, Gemmini was utilized to conduct research on each target age group, analyze their unique health challenges, and refine our approach. This also assisted in structuring the code, debugging, and optimizing functionality for a smoother user experience.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing functionality with simplicity was a primary challenge. We wanted the website to be rich yet minimalistic in features while still being intuitive, especially for younger users. Implementing a secure chat system also posed difficulties as we focused on ensuring privacy. Finally, we encountered challenges with data management to store and display user-specific cycle history.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

What we learned

Through this project, we learned the critical role empathy plays in design—understanding how to create features that truly resonate with users and address their needs. We also focused on crafting a fun, approachable design, accessible and welcoming to users of all ages. Beyond aesthetics, we delved into the technical aspects of secure data handling and designing intuitive, user-friendly layouts. Building a chat feature on a health-related platform was particularly insightful, as it required balancing user engagement with privacy and security to ensure a safe and supportive space for all.

What's next for Balanace-Wellness

Moving foward,we plan to expand Balance Wellness’s features to include AI-based symptom analysis for personalized wellness tips. We’d also like to integrate health expert Q&As, more community engagement features, and possibly a mobile app version.
