Inspiration
We were inspired by the PearlHacks theme of baking and all of the fintech sponsors here at the hackathon! When thinking of a simple and cute way to make learning about budgeting fun, we were reminded of web games we played in elementary and middle school that simulated running a business. Our thought for Bake It with Churro was to create a simple point and click adventure that has users make financial decisions for their bakery.
What it does
The user can choose where to set up their bakery, and what item their bakery will sell! The location determines the rent that the user has to pay each turn, and the item effects the profit that the user will make. The goal is to accrue $5,000 from the original $1,000.
How we built it
We used HTML and CSS to build our web game. Each contributor had their own fork, one where we styled, and the other where we built out the script and functionality using JavaScript.
Challenges we ran into
We had a lot of functionality that involved divs popping up and then disappearing. Getting the order of these divs appearing for smooth gameplay required a lot of collaboration and planning.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is only our second Hackathon, and we're super proud of the improvements we've made since the last one. We've gotten better at making interactive and styling our web game. Also, our workflow improved from last time, so we didn't have to deal with as many merge conflicts. Funnily enough, we also had trouble with keeping track of our nested divs, which created some formatting errors that took a keen eye to spot.
What we learned
We learned how to make objects in JavaScript and about the hover option when styling buttons!
What's next for Bake It with Churro
We want to implement traffic conditions that can affect day to day operations based on the location chosen. We also think that Bake It with Churro could be made more difficult in order to better simulate the real world.
