Inspiration
The idea for Badger Badger came from a desire for a tool that seemed more human but practical. Doesn't hold you to a pedestal but instead pulls you back and makes you feel more grounded. Focusing is something all devs struggle with at their computers, and here's an extension that tackles it head-on.
What it does
Badger Badger detects VSCode's current status, whether it is active or not. When idle for too long, it uses PowerShell to display system notifications to the user. We've also added SMS capabilities to send messages to your phone and designed a webpage to download it. You can find the webpage here: link
How we built it
We built this mainly using JavaScript, creativity, passion, gumption, and Claude.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into a lot of challenges. SMS integration was a real struggle due to an exposed API. We were unable to push a VSCode extension live due to the need for verification, so to consider the project deployed, we had to publish the download on a webpage, requiring the user to then select the package as an
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As a team of second-term CIT students, and this being our first hackathon, we are very impressed that we managed to release the app. We feel impressed with our ability to work under time constraints, communicate, and work together as a functional team.
What we learned
We learned extensively on the JavaScript language, and to be honest, it was a much-needed refresher on collaborative Git Repositories.
What's next for Badger Badger
There are lots of possibilities for Badger Badger. We considered adding unique AI-generated quips through reading current files, as well as unique soft or stern modes to give users more variety. Despite its jokey demeanour, focus is a real issue for all devs and computer users. If Badger Badger can help even some through its stern hand, then it's worth investigating further.
