Inspiration

We were inspired by the motivational posts that fill social media and are displayed in homes worldwide, inspiring others to be their best selves. When they see a quote first thing in the morning, they are driven to have a great day. Since this is the SSNON&TI Hackathon, though, we added the twist of demotivating users rather than influencing them positively.

What it does

Our program reads a user's information from their calendar to generate demotivational quotes about the events of their day using Gemini's API. Then these quotes are uploaded to the Adafruit display to be shown daily for the week. This device can then be hung up in the user's room so it's the first thing they see in the morning.

How we built it

We wrote our program using Python, and the quotes were developed using Gemini's API. We took a screenshot of a calendar and Gemini developed the quotes from that screenshot. The physical display we used was the Adafruit Matrix Portal S3.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge was increasing the speed of the words on the display. Right now, each message goes across the screen a little bit slowly, but that adds to the SSNON&TI theme.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're happy to have completed this in less than 6 hours and bring our idea to fruition.

What we learned

We learned how to use the Adafruit Matrix Portal S3 to display quotes, and we learned how to use Gemini's API to generate text, both skills that we had not previously possessed.
