Inspiration

I was inspired to create this project as my family is originally from a small town in Portugal called Resouro. There they lived a completely sustainable lifestyle. Since visiting a couple times a year I really notice the difference in the care for the environment there vs in the USA. I was reading one day on the benefits of having livestock, particularly chickens at home even in suburban areas. From reduced food waste, reduced carbon emissions, and to snowballing motivation for a homesteaded lifestyle, chickens seem to be a great idea.

For the app itself, I thought it would be super cool to be able to learn about care taking and track the environmental impact an individual is making. Somewhat like apps for women who are pregnant.

What it does

This app will ideally teach you about the lifestage of your chicks--> chickens and help you better take care of them. As well it will give you ideas on how to live more sustainable lives and track your progress in the meantime.

How we built it

App technologies in this project are new to me so it was a good challenge to start learning new skills. I started with a high fidelity mockup using visily, the images are from unsplash. For the actual app, it is with Swift and ideally the login and data management would be with firestore.

Challenges we ran into

I ran into some challenges with timing, since the technology is new I did get as far as I would have liked.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am super proud of the mockups and the idea. It reminds me of my family and I am happy I am able to share the environmental benefits of chickens at home.

What we learned

I learned about Swift UI and especially animations, I know I have played with greensock JS in vuewJS before but never Swift.

What's next for Backyards Beaks

Whats next would be to finish up the routing from view to view and connect to a database for data tracking and collection. I would also like to do an accessibility check on the app to make sure that it is friendly for all users.
