About the Project
Backward is a short drama-fantasy film told from the perspective of a nurse guiding an elderly man, Elias, through a mystical forest. What begins as a simple task slowly transforms into a surreal journey through memory, time, and acceptance — as Elias grows younger with every step they take.
I was inspired by the idea of "walking someone home" during their final moments — not through hospitals or hallways, but through something symbolic and emotional. The forest became a metaphorical space where time unravels, and where the nurse discovers that her purpose is not to stay, but to guide.
Inspiration
I wanted to explore:
the tenderness of caregiving,
the quiet beauty of letting go,
and the mystery of a world where time moves backward not scientifically, but spiritually.
What I Learned
Creating Backward taught me how powerful AI tools can be when used for emotional storytelling. I learned how to blend:
narrative pacing,
anime-inspired visual language,
and symbolic world-building into a short film that feels personal and cinematic.
How I Built It
The film was created using a combination of AI video generation, voice synthesis, and traditional editing. The workflow included:
Writing the full narrative script from the Nurse’s POV
Generating animatic-style sequences using Kling & Wan 2.2
Creating emotional voiceover performances using ElevenLabs
Editing, timing, transitions, and sound design in CapCut
Final color, pacing, and audio refinement
Challenges I Faced
Crafting consistent character visuals across multiple AI-generated scenes
Synchronizing emotional voiceover with atmospheric visuals
Maintaining tone and pacing in a minimalistic, two-character story
Ensuring the forest world feels magical but not horror-like
Achieving thematic clarity within a short runtime
Despite these challenges, the project became a deeply meaningful exploration of how AI tools can enhance emotional filmmaking.
