Inspiration

What inspired me to work on this was that I have had many bad experiences with businesses when something happens, like someone being out for the day or a piece of equipment not working. I also was inspired because I learned the amount of work these receptionists have to coordinate appointments and having an AI agent that could do everything in seconds would be so useful

What it does

Basically, when the business needs help scheduling a lot of appointments and coordinating many different customers, this AI can help. For example, let's say the lead doctor is sick and there are 20 appointments that the doctor had booked that day. Backstop will be able to take the context from the other available doctors, their schedules, and will be able to find a method to recover. It can either assign a new doctor for that appointment, or if it can't, it will call and then message the customer in seconds. And if there is a situation where the AI agent is not sufficient, it can escalate it to a human

How we built it

I built it with the help of Claude Code

Challenges we ran into

I had some trouble with setting up SMS messaging but ditched it because it requires ID verification and other complicated legal things that I could not complete in the time frame

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Honestly just finishing it was quite a complex project and i'm happy I got it done in time

What we learned

I learned a lot about the daily struggles business go through trying to coordinate many appointments and talking to so many customers

What's next for Backstop

Get it working with real phone numbers and real SMS and sell it to businesses
