Inspiration

Backbone came into existence because one of our friends who works as a freelancer wastes most of his time in chasing his invoices and writing emails to his late-paying clients rather than working on the designs he loves and we felt that an AI could do this easily.

What it does

Our Backbone enables a user to describe his work in plain English to generate an AI-drafted invoice, score clients for their payment risks, draft collection reminders and extract payment schedule from the contract using a live dashboard powered by actual persisted data.

How we built it

We have implemented the backend of Backbone using Flask with SQLite database and have cleanly separated the routes, DB and PDF generation while adding AI calls to generate an invoice and parse the contract and providing a fully seeded demo workspace for instant use.

Challenges we ran into

The most challenging part was how to map the data generated by AI into our system’s database and PDF generator consistently without letting any other user interfere in the queries.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It feels good knowing that Backbone actually is a product, complete with working accounts, hashed passwords, persisting data, and professional PDFs for downloading.

What we learned

It was great to learn about how to properly organize a growing Flask application as well as how much thought really does go into ensuring that an AI’s output comes off as credible.

What's next for Backbone

The plan for our next milestone is to integrate real payments from Stripe, so that our freelancer buddy can be paid through Backbone, and give users the ability to make their own workflows.
