Inspiration
Back on Track is based on how we as high schoolers find it difficult to prioritize our mental wellbeing. Daily, we are forced to meet expectations from the school’s competitive atmosphere. The result of these circumstances creates overwhelming feelings or thoughts that can affect our everyday lives from habits to relationships. Furthermore, not only does this apply to us as high schoolers but we see this behavior with our parents as well. Seattle is fast-paced, especially when it comes to growing companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, and more. People may feel too involved with their jobs' intense pace and forget to keep their mental health and their wellbeing a priority. We feel that everyone should have access to therapy and back on track allows them to do this.
What it does
Our app functions by letting clients be anonymous with their identity while being provided support with their problems from aspiring therapists. They are able to maintain a profile through a log-in, have sessions with aspiring therapists, and even talk to our “track buddy” in case our therapists aren’t available.
How we built it
After considering various platforms, we settled on Code.org’s: App Lab. We felt like it would be the easiest to navigate for what we were trying to make. Using Javascript we coded an app allowing clients to traverse through different screens, complete surveys, and talk to a chat box. Additionally, App Lab allows us to focus on the UI (user interface) of this app, which was a significant portion of the accessibility of Back on Track.
Challenges we ran into
We had the problem of choosing between launching the app or the website first, We then concluded that we should launch the app first because of its easier access and efficiency. We decided to implement a website later to help people who may not have access to a phone or a device that can have the app be able to use our platform.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of coming up with a problem and solution that can be eventually globalized and benefit both parties involved. We’re excited to eventually incorporate more modern technology such as an AI chatbot. We’re proud to be able to advocate for people our age who struggle with similar mental concerns as well as helping working adults.
What we learned
We were shocked by the high numbers of people going through mental challenges who are not able to be treated because of things like them not having enough money, or there not being enough people to listen. We also realized that many of these people don’t want this to be known, that they need treatment which makes it harder for them to get treatment and stay anonymous at the same time.
What's Next for Back on Track
Our plan includes finalizing our app and launching it. Once we launch it, we want to get sponsors and do some ad marketing to bring money in to fund our non-profit. Then for about 3 months, we will track how our app is doing, and based on the app’s performance we will launch a website and then add extra features such as incorporating into our ‘track buddy’.
