Inspiration
As a nursing graduate in Iraq, I have witnessed a heartbreaking reality in our primary healthcare centers: children missing life-saving vaccines simply because their mothers lost a piece of paper. In fragile healthcare systems, immunization records are still tracked on easily damaged paper cards. This leads to "vaccination dropout," leaving children vulnerable to preventable diseases like Polio and Hepatitis. I realized that clinical care wasn't enough; we needed a digital transformation. I wanted to build a system that ensures no child misses a dose, combining my clinical knowledge with my passion for Health Informatics.
What it does
BabyGuard is an AI-powered Immunization Intelligence System designed for both nurses and parents.
For Nurses (Master Registry): A secure dashboard to register newborns, track their vaccination progress, and automatically calculate upcoming due dates based on the Iraqi National Immunization Schedule.
For Parents : they can get a link to their child file to see their proggress also they can receive one-click WhatsApp reminders when a dose is due.
AI Vaccine Assistant: An integrated AI chat agent that answers parents' immediate questions about vaccine.
How we built it
I am a "Clinician-Developer." I do not own a laptop, so I built this entire project on my phone using AI-assisted development tools.
Frontend: I used HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript to create a responsive, mobile-first UI that works perfectly on clinic tablets.
Backend: I integrated Firebase Firestore for real-time, NoSQL database management to securely store patient records.
Logic: I applied the computational thinking I am currently learning in Harvard's CS50, alongside data standards from my Johns Hopkins Health Informatics training, to write the scheduling algorithms.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was the hardware limitation. Coding a full-stack application with Firebase integration on a phone required immense patience and creative problem-solving. Additionally, translating complex clinical guidelines (the exact days between specific vaccine doses) into flawless JavaScript logic was a rigorous test of my new programming skills. also also design a simple interface for both the healthcare work so they can use it simply during the work hours and for partners it should be so simple to include equity between parents even those who don't understand technology .
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am incredibly proud that I didn't just design a concept—I built a fully functional, deployed prototype. I successfully bridged the gap between my frontline nursing experience and software engineering. Adding the AI Assistant and seeing it correctly answer clinical questions was a massive milestone for me as a solo female founder.
What we learned
learned that technology is only as good as its clinical application. Through this hackathon, I deepened my understanding of Firebase, asynchronous JavaScript, and AI integration. More importantly, I learned that innovation doesn't require a perfect tech setup; it just requires a deep understanding of the problem and the determination to solve it.
What's next for BabyGuard
BabyGuard is the first step in my broader vision. I plan to scale this prototype into a comprehensive SaaS platform for clinics across Iraq. I also plan to upgrade the AI Assistant using advanced LLMs to support multiple local dialects, ensuring health equity and digital literacy for all mothers in my region. Also I want to integrate more scenarios to the app regarding situation that my face the health work as they legal documentation
