Inspiration

As new parents, my partner and I struggled to navigate safe, age-appropriate baby food introduction—sifting through conflicting nutrition advice, worrying about allergens, and short on time for meal prep. We saw other caregivers facing the same stress, so we set out to create a tool that simplifies this critical stage with evidence-based, personalized guidance.

What it does

BabyFood Maker delivers tailored homemade baby food support for 6–24 month olds: age-specific food guides (texture/portion recommendations), AI-generated balanced meal plans, structured allergen introduction schedules, batch prep/storage tips, and quick ingredient allergy risk assessments—all no-login access for immediate use.

How we built it

We started by researching pediatric nutrition guidelines and allergen introduction best practices, then mapped core user journeys (age selection, meal planning, allergen tracking). We built the frontend with React for mobile/tablet responsiveness, used Node.js/Express for backend logic, integrated AI APIs for meal plan generation, and PostgreSQL to store allergen/risk assessment data. UI was designed in Figma with soft, baby-friendly tones.

Challenges we ran into

Calibrating age-based content logic to scale texture/portion recommendations accurately across 6–24 months was tricky—we had to validate with pediatric nutrition resources to avoid errors. Also, ensuring the allergen tracking system prevented overlapping introductions required tight backend logic to flag user missteps in real time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a seamless, intuitive tool that balances safety (clear high-risk allergen warnings) and convenience (batch prep guides). The no-login demo access makes it accessible to busy parents, and user testing with caregivers confirmed it reduces stress around meal planning and allergen introduction.

What we learned

We deepened our understanding of pediatric nutrition regulations and user-centered design for caregiver needs—prioritizing clarity and simplicity over complexity. We also learned to balance AI-generated content with evidence-based guidelines to ensure accuracy and trust.

What's next for this project

We plan to expand recipe diversity to include cultural food options, add portion scaling for multiple children, integrate a simplified meal prep timer, and refine the allergen tracking to include long-term tolerance monitoring. We also aim to update nutrition guidelines quarterly based on latest pediatric research.
