Inspiration
Motor-impaired individuals face from huge difficulties to impossibility when it comes to independently applying makeup on themselves.
What it does
- The robot will apply makeup with the same level of precision and artistry as a human makeup artist and with the highest level of safety.
- Thanks to Facial recognition, the AI will consider each user's specific features and make decisions about the appropriate products and amount of makeup to apply.
- The user interface will allow users to interact with the makeup robot through voice or touch screen, including validating the makeup through virtual try-on capability. This interface could be in the form of a mobile application and a touch screen on the robot itself.
How we built it
The robot design has considered to have:
- High ergonomic – allowing the robot to apply the makeup with highest precision level.
- Friendly look – user must feel comfortable about the robot look.
- " High-touch" look – the robot look must inspire prestige beauty and feel as part of any modern home.
The robot hardware, components and technology include:
- Sensors and chips.
- Inertial measurement units & torque sensors.
- Precision reducers.
- Other body material parts.
- Servomotors and motor drives.
- Battery and battery control system.
- Camera with facial recognition.
- Wiring from cartridges to "hand" dispensers.
- Cartridges holders and levels control system.
- "Hand" Dispensers flexible tool system.
- Artificial Intelligence.
- Machine Learning.
- Communication capabilities (voice & touch screen).
- User Interface.
- Motion planning and control software.
- Sensor fusion and perception software.
Challenges we ran into
- Differentiating our idea from other existing initiatives of makeup robots in the market.
- Developing a robot that can apply makeup with the same level of precision and artistry as a human makeup artist.
- Balancing complexity and affordability while developing a suitable marketing strategy.
- The safety of the robot when working near a person's face, as the robot would need to be designed with safety features such as sensors that can detect when it is too close to a person's eyes or mouth.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Taking a rough idea to a real and innovative concept of a makeup robot that we strongly believe could be built, make an impact in the field of accessible beauty and be affordable.
- Our robot increases the accessibility to beauty products for people having motor impairments disability.
- Our robot brings higher accessibility and inclusivity than other initiatives we have seen in the market. It also covers a wider range of beauty products.
What we learned
- Bringing new and creative concept among other makeup robots initiatives.
- More awareness of multiple types of disabilities and issues faced by disabled persons.
- More knowledge about creating robots, both on hardware/components and technology areas.
What's next for b'ESTEE – The Robotic Makeup Solution
- After applying to Ideathon, next step would be to turn our idea into reality by actively be involved in the design and manufacturing of this amazing robot.
- Integrate the b'ESTEE robots into the landscape of ELC stores, beauty salons and individuals' homes.
