Inspiration

We have researched and found that demographic shifts in Barking and Dagenham has naturally waned the sense of belonging in communities. We wanted to bring the people together and preserve the heritage of Barking and Dagenham. We also wanted to tackle the generational divide within our community so people from different age groups can sympathise with each other.

What it does

It allows residents of Barking and Dagenham to share their memories that they made in places of the borough. They enter the name of the place they want to share memories of which are converted into coordinates using Nominatim API. We use these coordinates to group multiple stories together and represent them with a pin. The user is allowed to then view the stories using that pin.

How we built it

We used HTML CSS and JavaScript for the frontend and Flask(Python) and SQLite for backend.

Challenges we ran into

We had to manage this project along with work and academic commitments. We gave ourselves realistic timetables to help complete this project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have a fully functioning website by the end of this hackathon.

What we learned

This was our first time working with a framework so we learnt how to set up API endpoints. We also learned how to manage our time better.

What's next for B&D Community Connect

We plan to add a lot of features, such as login system and residency verification. These were not part of the current project as we needed infrastructure to store and process such sensitive information, which was not feasible in the given time. We also plan to add text to speech support for visually impaired residents.
