Accumulation of wastes in the area of Menna in Mecca

• It is difficult to take away the wastes outside the area. • Only half of the capacity of the compactors is used due to a defect in the design. • It is hard to put the wastes inside the compactor because of it’s height. • The bad odors resulted from the liquids of the wastes. • It is not possible to know the amount of garbage inside the compactor.

What it does

• Internet of Things facilities will be added to the hydraulic compactors to gain a remote control and monitoring capabilities which will drastically enhance the overall performance of the waste management process. • Making sure that the compactor is operating correctly and identifying errors remotely. • Enhancing the door of the compactor in a way that increases its capacity. • Adding an easy to use Mechanism to facilitate placing wastes in the compactor. • Drainage of fluids from compactor into a special container , which is monitored remotely. • Gathering data of the management of the compactors to be used in the future to predict problems and solve them.

How we built it

Connecting an industrial PLC ( Programmable logic controller) to the Internet and this enabling exchange of data in both directions . In addition to a Web based Dashboard application to monitor and control the compactors.

Challenges we ran into

Programming of PLC and connecting them to MQTT messaging servers and IoT cloud servers.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

What we learned

New Hardware , Software skills and cloud based services knowledge.

What's next for AZM team - IoT waste management

Targeting another Market segments other than waste management Authorities like Factories and Oil & Gas companies
