🌿 Inspiration
India is the birthplace of Ayurveda — a tradition deeply rooted in natural healing.
But today, adulteration, fake labeling, and missing source data have created a trust gap in Ayurvedic products.
We wanted to solve this by combining blockchain transparency with IoT-based traceability, making every herb’s journey — from farm to formulation — fully verifiable.
💡 What it does
AyuTrace is a blockchain-powered system that tracks Ayurvedic herbs from their point of collection to the final packaged product.
It ensures authenticity, transparency, and sustainability using:
- IoT sensors for real-time geo-tagging and soil data,
- Smart contracts for automated validation,
- IPFS for storing tamper-proof lab reports, and
- QR codes for consumer verification and product traceability.
🛠️ How we built it
We developed AyuTrace as a decentralized, permissioned blockchain network using:
- Hyperledger Fabric for secure and immutable transactions,
- Node.js & Express.js for the backend,
- React.js for the web portal,
- IPFS for document storage, and
- IoT sensor integration for real-time environmental tracking.
We simulated the entire process from farmer data entry to consumer QR verification through prototype dashboards and flow models.
🚧 Challenges we ran into
- Integrating offline data capture for rural farmers with poor connectivity.
- Managing data synchronization between IoT devices and blockchain nodes.
- Designing user-friendly dashboards that work for both regulators and small-scale producers.
- Ensuring interoperability between blockchain and IPFS for faster validation.
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a working prototype flow demonstrating end-to-end herbal traceability.
- Created a scalable model that can easily integrate with AYUSH certification systems.
- Designed a transparent consumer experience through QR-based product verification.
- Presented a sustainable digital solution bridging traditional Ayurveda with modern technology.
📚 What we learned
- How blockchain, IoT, and AI can work together to make real-world systems tamper-proof and efficient.
- The importance of data standardization (FHIR model) for healthcare-related ecosystems.
- How to design solutions for low-connectivity, rural environments without compromising security.
🚀 What's next for AyuTrace – Blockchain Traceability for Ayurvedic Herbs
- Launch a pilot program with local farmer cooperatives and certified laboratories.
- Integrate AI-based predictive analytics for crop quality and fraud detection.
- Collaborate with AYUSH Ministry and export agencies to implement nationwide traceability standards.
- Develop a mobile-first platform with multilingual support for collectors and farmers.
