Inspiration
India faces an immense thalassemia challenge, with hundreds of thousands affected and a system strained by fragmented care, supply chain issues, and limited awareness. The urgency to reduce needless hardships for patients and families drove us to build Ayu-Connect, a intelligent platform designed to unify stakeholders and deliver proactive, compassionate, and reliable thalassemia care for everyone who needs it.
What it does
Ayu-Connect is an AI-powered mobile and web ecosystem that transforms thalassemia management. It connects patients, donors, healthcare providers, and support organizations through specialized agentic AI tools. Key features include automated care coordination, predictive analytics for transfusions and blood inventory, RAG-powered chatbots for verified medical support, and integrated dashboards for real-time insights and decision-making.
How we built it
We leveraged advanced frameworks like LangGraph for orchestrating collaborative AI agents, with FastAPI and Flutter powering the secure backend and cross-platform app. By integrating real-time APIs (e-RaktKosh, hospital EHR), MCP servers, and vector databases for retrieval-augmented generation, we ensured the platform is robust, scalable, and compliant with the latest healthcare data regulations.
Challenges we ran into
Handling sensitive health data demanded rigorous security and DPDP Act 2023 compliance from day one. We also had to bridge gaps technical, regulatory, and social such as ensuring smooth integration with existing hospital systems, managing variable digital literacy, optimizing AI for real-world unpredictability, and building stakeholder trust in AI-driven healthcare.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created India’s first AI-powered, unified thalassemia registry and coordination system, validated safe, accurate medical chatbots through RAG, and streamlined patient and donor interactions with evidence-based intelligence. By automating routine tasks, we freed up provider time and reduced patient family expenses demonstrating measurable impact in early pilots.
What we learned
Building a healthcare platform at this scale taught us that technical innovation must go hand-in-hand with user empowerment, trust, and compliance. We deepened our understanding of agentic AI orchestration, the importance of patient-centric design, and the real-world complexity of nationwide healthcare transformation.
What's next for Ayu-Connect
We plan to expand Ayu-Connect beyond pilot cities to a national rollout, enhance multi-lingual support, and integrate with wearable health devices for even more personalized care. We aim to contribute to cutting-edge medical research and adapt our framework to other chronic disease management contexts, setting a new benchmark for AI in Indian healthcare.
