Inspiration

I lost my friend to misinformation and the feeling of being alone on her maternal journey. She struggled to find trusted guidance, felt isolated, and relied on unreliable information during pregnancy. That experience stayed with me. Beyond her story, I observed many women navigating pregnancy in silence uncomfortable asking sensitive questions publicly, lacking emotional support, and often supported by partners who did not fully understand what they were going through. These realities inspired me to build Ayomama, so no mother has to feel alone during such a critical stage of life.

What it does

Ayomama provides pregnant women and new mothers with continuous maternal wellness support beyond hospital visits. The platform offers trusted health guidance, prenatal wellness activities, medication tracking, affirmations, and labor-preparation tools in a private, culturally relevant space—helping mothers feel informed, supported, and emotionally safe throughout their journey.

How we built it

Ayomama was built as a mobile-first maternal wellness platform focused on simplicity and relevance. I started by identifying core needs prenatal wellness, medication tracking, affirmations, and labor preparation and designed the product as a prototype around these features. User feedback and healthcare insights guided feature prioritization and content development. The project emphasizes personalization by pregnancy stage and a low-barrier user experience to ensure accessibility.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was balancing medical accuracy with emotional support in a way that feels human, not clinical. Limited resources also meant prioritizing only the most impactful features early on. Additionally, building trust in digital maternal health required careful consideration of privacy, cultural context, and credibility.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of building a maternal wellness prototype grounded in real user needs and empathy. Through early conversations with pregnant women and new mothers, we validated the demand for a private, trusted alternative to social media for maternal health support. These insights helped shape Ayomama’s mission, core features, and vision creating a strong foundation for a platform designed to ensure that no mother feels alone.

What we learned

Through research, interviews, and early user conversations, I learned that maternal care goes far beyond hospital visits. Women need continuous emotional reassurance, culturally relevant information, and private spaces where they can ask questions without judgment. I also learned that trust, simplicity, and accessibility are essential for adoption, especially in underserved communities.
