Inspiration
I wanted to recreate the charm of the classic Dino Runner but with a unique twist: an axolotl as the main character. Axolotls are iconic creatures from Mexican culture and felt like the perfect fit for a fun, fast-paced endless runner.
What it does
The game challenges players to survive as long as possible while dodging enemies. The axolotl can jump to avoid them and get some score the longer he survives.
How we built it
Frontend: HTML5 Canvas + JavaScript for rendering sprites, handling input, and animations. Assets: Pixel art backgrounds, enemies, and character sprites created from scratch and optimized for performance. Audio: Custom jump and collision sounds to enhance feedback.
Challenges we ran into
Handling responsive scaling so the canvas always fits any screen without leaving white borders. Timing issues when restarting the game, like preventing the player from jumping immediately. Debugging asset loading and ensuring sound playback works reliably across browsers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Delivering a fully playable endless runner with smooth controls and polished animations. 2D animations I made for the first time ever.
What we learned
How to optimize sprite-based animations and scrolling backgrounds for a smoother experience. Techniques for game state management (restart, game over, score tracking). The importance of UX polish, like audio feedback and restart mechanics, to make a game more engaging.
What's next for Axolotl Quest
Adding more enemy types inspired by natural predators. Power-ups (speed boost, shield bubbles, double jump). Seasonal events and cosmetic skins for the axolotl. Expanding the Devvit integration with a global leaderboard and subreddit challenges.
