Inspiration

Health insurance in Africa faces critical challenges that impact millions of lives daily. Tejiri and I have long been passionate about this problem, and we came to the hackathon with a clear vision for AXK Insurance. We were motivated by these stark realities:

  • Lengthy Claims Processing: Traditional claims take an average of 15-45 days to process
  • High Administrative Costs: Approximately 30% of health expenditures are consumed by administrative overhead
  • Outdated Record Keeping: Roughly 90% of healthcare data is still stored in paper form
  • Trust Deficit: Only 2 in 10 Africans trust insurance providers due to opaque processes
  • Data Privacy Concerns: Patients lack control over their sensitive health data

We've been thinking about how blockchain technology could revolutionize health insurance in Africa for some time, and this hackathon gave us the perfect opportunity to bring our idea to life and demonstrate its potential. With just 4 days, we set out to show how AXK Insurance could transform healthcare access for millions.

What it does

For this hackathon, we presented our vision for AXK Insurance - a blockchain-powered health insurance platform with two main components:

Our Concept and Demonstration

  • B2B WebApp for Healthcare Providers: A web application allowing hospitals and clinics to process claims instantly, access patient data (with consent), and manage insurance workflows
  • B2C Mobile App for Patients: A mobile application enabling patients to manage policies, track claims in real-time, and control access to their health data
  • Backend System: APIs and database architecture to support secure, efficient insurance operations
  • Smart Contract Framework: Blockchain-based contracts to automate insurance processes and eliminate delays
  • Transformative Potential: Our demonstration showed how this system could reduce claims processing from 15-45 days to just seconds

How we built it

To present our vision during the hackathon, Tejiri and I (Joseph) focused on creating a compelling demonstration of the AXK Insurance concept:

    • Developed key screens of the B2C Mobile App to illustrate patient experience
    • Implemented essential backend functionality to support the demonstration
