Inspiration

In the midst of the pandemic, companies have shifted largely to working from home. This means that online tools to facilitate communication between teams are more important than ever before. We noticed that some of the tools that are widely used today have problems that make working from home more difficult than it already is. We think that by combining some of the best features of existing communications platforms and adding some ideas of our own, we can make Axis the ultimate platform for the intersection of communications and collaboration.

What it does

Axis facilitates communication between teammates. By using a drill-down organization to present channels combined with organizing the content in channels into posts with replies rather than just a log of messages we make it easy for a user to find the specific conversations that they need to be a part of. The task manager system allows for teams to always know who is working on what, and the "Your Desk at Home" feature facilitates quick "coffee-chat" interactions among coworkers.

How we built it

We used the Universal Windows Platform to build Axis. The coding was done in C# and XAML.

Challenges we ran into

This was our first time working with UWP and XAML so we needed to spend some time getting familiarized with them. Additionally we are a team of only two people, only one of which is a developer, so we were limited in what we could accomplish in this short time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We think that our idea has a lot of potential and we are proud of the efforts we've made in fleshing out the features we want in our project. We met with an industry professional in Strategic communications and with her feedback we feel confident that Axis could be very beneficial to companies. Even though our development of the app isn't at the level that we want it to be right now, we are proud of what we were able to do in such a short time and we hope to continue development in the future.

What we learned

We learned about the struggles that are faced when trying to work in teams over the internet and what is needed in order for teams to be successful. We also learned how to use UWP to develop an app.

What's next for Axis

We will continue to work on bringing to life the features that we envision for Axis.
