Development

Prerequisites

  • Node.js 18+
  • npm or yarn

Setup

npm install
npm run dev

HTTPS for Geolocation Testing

The app uses geolocation API which requires HTTPS in production. For development testing:

# The vite.config.js is already configured with HTTPS
npm run dev
# Visit https://localhost:5174 (note: https, not http)

Deployment

Important: HTTPS Requirement

Geolocation only works on HTTPS websites. Make sure your deployment uses HTTPS:

Netlify

  • Automatic HTTPS included
  • Deploy with npm run build

Vercel

  • Automatic HTTPS included
  • Deploy with npm run build

GitHub Pages

  • Does NOT support HTTPS for custom domains
  • Geolocation will NOT work
  • Consider alternatives like Netlify or Vercel

Custom Server

npm run build
# Serve the dist/ folder with HTTPS

Environment Variables

Create a .env file:

VITE_GEOAPIFY_API_KEY=your_geoapify_key
VITE_OPENWEATHER_API_KEY=your_openweather_key
VITE_NASA_API_KEY=your_nasa_key

API Keys Setup

  1. Geoapify: Get API key
  2. OpenWeather: Get API key
  3. NASA: Use DEMO_KEY or get API key

Troubleshooting

Geolocation Not Working

  • On localhost: Works with npm run dev (HTTP exception)
  • On deployed site: Must be HTTPS
  • Browser permissions: User must allow location access
  • Error messages: Check browser console and UI notifications

API Issues

  • Check API keys in .env
  • Verify API limits/quota
  • Check network connectivity
